Lëkurësi Castle Above Saranda

Lëkurësi Castle (Kalaja e Lëkurësit in Albanian) is the best viewpoint anywhere near Saranda. It sits on a hill about 233 metres above the sea, with a sweeping panorama over the whole bay, the little islands off Ksamil, and the Greek island of Corfu on the horizon.
From our apartment it's just a short trip up the hill. If you want to make one evening special, this is the first thing we recommend — bring a drink, wait for the sun to drop, and you'll understand why everyone comes up here.
A little history
The fortress was built in 1537 by the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent to guard the coast and the Saranda–Butrint road against the Venetian fleet. It was originally held by a garrison of around 220 soldiers.
What you'll find today
The old walls and towers remain, and you can wander them freely — there are no turnstiles or entry fee just to enjoy the view. Just below the castle you'll also spot small concrete bunkers from the communist era, thousands of which dot Albania.
The view people come for
It's the widest panorama in the entire Saranda area — the sea, the bay, the town below you, the Albanian mountains behind, and Corfu directly across the water. On a clear day you can see south to the Ksamil islands and the Butrint lagoon.
Why come at sunset
The sun sets into the Ionian Sea right in front of you and the whole bay turns gold. It's the highest sunset viewpoint reachable from Saranda and, deservedly, the most popular one — which is why we'd suggest arriving a bit early, before it fills up.
How to get up there
By car or taxi up a short but steep road that winds around the back of the hill; the turn is signposted off the road toward Ksamil. A taxi up and back, including waiting time, runs roughly 10–20 euros. Fitter visitors can also walk up in about an hour.
The restaurant inside the walls
There's a restaurant right inside the castle with a large outdoor terrace — grilled meats, salads, local cheeses and cold drinks with the panorama behind you. In season (roughly May to September) it's a lovely place for dinner, or at least a sunset drink.
