Things to do in Saranda and around

Saranda is a lively town in southern Albania, on the so-called Albanian Riviera, and we think it makes an ideal base for exploring the whole southern coast. From one spot you can reach turquoise beaches, hop on a boat trip, visit the ancient ruins of Butrint and the Blue Eye spring – then head back to the busy seafront for dinner.

In this overview we've gathered the best of what Saranda and the surrounding area have to offer, with links to more detailed guides for the bigger sights. Our apartment sits in a lively, local part of Saranda with the beach right behind the house, about two minutes on foot – a handy starting point for a full day out or a quick morning swim.

Beaches and beach bars

In Saranda itself and just outside town there are plenty of beaches – from the pebbly town beach to the popular Mango Beach and quieter coves like Pulëbardha. The beach by our apartment is right behind the house, so you can fit in a morning swim before your first coffee.

Boat trips and hidden coves

Full-day boat trips leave from Saranda's harbour and cruise the coast to the little Ksamil islets and bays you can't reach by road. Some of the loveliest beaches, like Krorëza, are accessible only by boat – perfect for snorkelling and a bit of quiet.

Nature and day trips

The best-known sight is the Blue Eye, a karst spring in the forest about 20 km from Saranda, reached by a short walk from the car park. Nearby is Ksamil with its turquoise water. Many operators offer a combined day trip taking in Butrint, Ksamil and the Blue Eye in one go.

History and culture

Butrint is an ancient city and a UNESCO World Heritage site – wandering its ruins among greenery above the lagoon is rewarding even if you're not usually into history. Above Saranda stands Lekuresi Castle, dating from 1537 and a classic spot for sunset.

Food and local life

Restaurants serving fresh fish and seafood are everywhere, right next door to our place and across the street, with a supermarket close by and a little kiosk under the building. The locals are wonderfully friendly, so you'll always get a tip on where to eat.

Evenings, sunsets and the promenade

By day the seafront promenade is quiet; in the evening it comes alive as people stroll, sit out at the bars and have dinner looking across the strait towards Corfu. For the best sunset, head up to Lekuresi Castle.

FAQ

Is it worth having a car in Saranda?

Getting around Saranda itself is easy on foot. For trips to the Blue Eye, Butrint or the surrounding coves a car gives you freedom, but an organised full-day tour works just as well and usually includes transport and entrance fees.

Can you do a day trip to Corfu from Saranda?

Yes. In season there are daily ferries from Saranda to the Greek island of Corfu; the crossing takes roughly 30–70 minutes depending on whether you take the fast or the standard ferry. It's a popular day trip.

When is the best time to visit Saranda?

The main beach season runs roughly from June to September, when it's warm and everything is open. May and early October are quieter and pleasant for day trips around the area, with the sea still inviting for a swim.
