A Perfect Day in Saranda: From Morning Swim to Sunset

Saranda isn't a place you need to rush through. The best days here happen when you have somewhere to come back to and something to build the day around — so instead of a long list of sights, here is one specific day, the way we actually live it, with our apartment as the base.
The apartment is on the 1st floor in a lively, local part of Saranda, and the beach is right behind the house, about two minutes on foot. That changes everything: you can swim before breakfast and again after lunch, with nothing to plan in advance. Here's the day we'd suggest for a first stay.
Morning: the sea before the crowds
Head down to the water as soon as you wake up, ideally before eight. At that hour the beach behind the house is quiet, the water is clear, and the sun isn't harsh yet. Put your swimsuit on in the flat, sling a towel over your shoulder, and you're in the sea within minutes — no car, no parking, no packing.
Breakfast and coffee on the balcony
After the swim, come back up and start the day slowly. The balcony doesn't face the sea, so don't expect a bay view from it, but it's just right for a morning coffee and a fresh roll from the kiosk under the building. The little shop downstairs covers your basics, so you can have breakfast without going out.
Late morning: a half-day trip to Ksamil or Butrint
While it's still cool, take a trip out. Ksamil, with its turquoise coves, is only about 12 km south — 20–30 minutes by car or taxi, and roughly the same by the bus from the port. A little further on sits ancient Butrint, a UNESCO site, around 40 minutes' drive. Either one fits into a morning and gets you back for lunch.
Lunch: fresh grilled fish
For lunch we'd go for the simplest and best thing Saranda does — fresh fish off the grill, grilled octopus, or calamari, dressed with just olive oil and lemon. You can eat at the restaurants right next door and across the street, or down on the waterfront by the port, where the catch comes straight off the boats.
Afternoon: back to the water
Give the hottest part of the day to the sea and the shade. Wander back to the beach behind the house, grab an ice cream from the kiosk, and alternate swimming with doing nothing. Because it's so close, popping up to the flat for a dry shirt — or a two-hour nap after lunch — is no trouble at all, which is a sensible plan in Saranda's heat.
Evening: Lëkurësi Castle and dinner on the promenade
About an hour before sunset, head up above town to Lëkurësi Castle (around 200 m above the sea, a few euros by taxi). It has the widest view in the area — the whole bay, Corfu, and the coast stretching down toward Ksamil. After the sun drops, come back down and end the day with dinner on the promenade by the water, where people go for fish, seafood, or just a drink.
FAQ
Can I do both Ksamil and Butrint in one morning?
You can, but it's more enjoyable to pick just one. Ksamil is about beaches and coves, Butrint is about ancient ruins in nature. If you want both, set off early and you can also stop at Lëkurësi Castle on the way back.
How far is the apartment from the beach?
The beach is right behind the house, about two minutes on foot. That makes it easy to go for a swim two or three times a day without worrying about transport or parking.
Do I need a car for the day trips?
No. In season a bus runs to Ksamil and Butrint from the port roughly every hour, and taxis are cheap. A car is mainly useful for the Blue Eye and trips further afield.
When is the best time for sunset at Lëkurësi Castle?
Arrive about an hour before sunset so you have time to walk up to the walls and find a spot. Times shift with the season, so check them approximately for your travel dates.
