Getting to Saranda

Getting to Saranda

Saranda sits at the very south of Albania, at the end of the Albanian Riviera, and there's more than one way to reach it. None of them is complicated, but each suits a slightly different traveller. Here are the three main options the way we know them and the way we suggest them to our guests — with honest pros and cons. Our apartment is just a short way from the port, so however you arrive, you'll be close to us.

Fly to Tirana, then along the coast

Tirana International Airport has the most connections from across Europe. From there it's roughly 4–5 hours to Saranda by car or coach along the coast. It's the longer route, but a scenic one — you'll see a good slice of inland Albania and the shoreline.

Bus, transfer, or your own car from Tirana

Long-distance buses run from Tirana to Saranda (from around €16 from the city terminals, with pricier direct services from the airport). A private transfer costs in the region of €140–180 per vehicle and is the most comfortable. A rental car gives you freedom, but factor in the driving time and fuel.

Fly to Corfu, then ferry to Saranda

In season, the fastest and most comfortable option is often to fly to the Greek island of Corfu and cross by ferry straight to Saranda's port. A fast catamaran does it in about 30–35 minutes; a regular ferry takes roughly 70–75 minutes.

The Corfu ferry — what to keep in mind

In summer the ferry runs several times a day; off-season there are far fewer crossings, sometimes just one a day. Tickets are approximately €19–30 per person. On Corfu a local bus links the airport to the port. We'd suggest booking ahead and allowing time for passport control, since you're crossing from the EU into a non-EU country.

A car, scooter or motorbike for day trips

If you want to explore the area, your own wheels pay off. From our part of Saranda it's about 12 km to the beaches at Ksamil, a little further to ancient Butrint, and around 22 km (some 30–45 minutes) to the Blue Eye spring (Syri i Kaltër). That's what makes Saranda such a good base.

From the port to us

Our apartment is only a short distance from the port, so arriving by ferry leaves you nicely close. The beach is right behind the house, a couple of minutes on foot, and everything you need — a little shop, restaurants, a supermarket — is within walking distance.

FAQ

Should I fly to Tirana or to Corfu?

It depends on your plans. Tirana usually has more budget flights, but you face a 4–5 hour drive afterwards. Corfu takes a bit of getting to, but in season the ferry to Saranda is just 30–90 minutes and very comfortable. If you're staying mainly on the Riviera, Corfu often makes more sense.

How often does the Corfu–Saranda ferry run?

Several times a day in high season, and much less often off-season — sometimes only once a day. Times change, so we recommend checking the current timetable and buying your ticket in advance.

Do we need a car in Saranda?

Not for staying with us — the beach, shops and restaurants are all walkable. But a car or scooter is handy if you want day trips to Ksamil, Butrint or the Blue Eye.

How far is the apartment from the port?

Just a short way. If you arrive by ferry from Corfu, it's a quick hop to us, so getting in is easy even with luggage.
