Saranda for Couples

Saranda isn't a place for staged, brochure-style romance. It's a lively little seaside town in southern Albania where couples have a lovely time precisely because everything is natural and unforced. We keep an apartment here, a couple of minutes from the beach, and over the years we've worked out what makes a few days together really nice: long evenings, good food by the water, one trip for the sense of adventure, and plenty of time to do nothing at all. Here's our honest take on enjoying Saranda as a couple.
Sunset over the bay
The nicest shared moment of the day tends to be at sunset. Above the town, on Lëkurësi hill, stands an old castle from the 16th century, and from its walls you can see the whole bay, the island of Corfu, and the mountains behind. The way up is short, just a few minutes by taxi from the centre. You can come up just for a drink and watch the sky turn orange, or stay for dinner as the town lights start to flicker below. We'd suggest arriving while it's still light, finding a spot, and letting the slow shift into evening happen at its own pace.
Dinner by the water with fresh fish
Saranda lives off the sea, and you can taste it on the plate. Local tavernas serve fish the fishermen brought in that morning, often octopus, sea bass, or grilled prawns with olive oil and lemon. Some places have their own fish counter where you pick the fish yourself and they cook it for you. Prices are usually friendly, but they shift in season, so it's worth checking the current ones on the spot. You don't need a fancy restaurant; the best dinner for two is often a simple taverna with a table almost at the water's edge.
A quiet cove or a sunset boat trip
The main beach is lively, which is part of its charm, but as a couple you'll sometimes want some calm. Boats leave the harbour for smaller coves and the little islands near Ksamil, where the water is turquoise and there are fewer people. You can take a seat on a larger boat, or in season arrange a small boat with a skipper just for the two of you. Sunset cruises are lovely too, bringing you back to the harbour just as the sea turns golden. Exact times and prices change in season, so it's best to ask right there at the pier.
An evening stroll along the promenade
When it cools down, the seafront promenade comes alive. Palm trees, cafés, the smell of grilling, the quiet wash of the waves. It's the kind of walk where there's nowhere to rush, you just amble along the sea, grab an ice cream or a coffee, and watch the world go by. Early in the morning the promenade is almost empty and beautifully quiet, perfect for a first coffee together. Our apartment is a short walk from here, so you can easily stroll back in the evening on foot.
Day trips for two
Saranda makes a great base for trips. Ksamil, with its white beaches and turquoise water, is about twenty minutes by car. Ancient Butrint, a UNESCO site, is roughly half an hour and pairs nicely with Ksamil for a single day out. The Blue Eye, an underground spring with astonishingly blue water, is a short way inland. And if you want a day somewhere completely different, a ferry runs from the harbour to Corfu, with the fast boat taking around half an hour. We'd suggest one trip rather than three, so you keep enough time to simply relax.
A slow pace, with the apartment as your base
The best thing about Saranda for couples isn't a list of attractions, it's the pace. Our apartment is in a lively, local part of town, on the first floor, with a balcony that's pleasant for morning coffee and for sitting out in the evening. The beach is a two-minute stroll behind the house. There's a small shop under the building, restaurants next door and across the street, and a supermarket close by. The locals are warm and welcoming. It's the kind of base you set off from in the morning and stroll back to in the evening, no stress, no driving. That's exactly what makes a few days together feel calm.
