Saranda with kids: family travel on the Albanian Riviera

Saranda is, in our experience, one of the easier places to travel with children. The sea is warm and calm in the coves, distances are short, and locals genuinely like kids – nobody frowns when a toddler gets restless over dinner. We host families in our apartment, and over the years we've picked up a few tips that make a trip here with children a lot smoother.
This isn't a luxury resort with a kids' club – it's an ordinary, lived-in part of town where a family can cook, do laundry and be on the beach in two minutes. That, we think, is exactly what works best for little ones.
Ksamil: shallow turquoise water for little ones
About 20 minutes from Saranda, Ksamil has lagoon-like coves where the water is shallow, calm and clear. The entry into the sea is gentle, so even small children can paddle safely near the shore. Most beaches have loungers, showers to rinse off the salt, and restaurants right by the sand.
Short, manageable day trips
A big plus for families is that the main sights are close and easy to split up. Ancient Butrint (UNESCO) is calm enough in two hours, the Blue Eye is a short stop at a turquoise spring, and Ksamil is your swimming reward. A full-day loop can be a lot for the youngest, though – we prefer one sight in the morning and the water in the afternoon.
Stress-free family food
Albanian food is easy with kids: grilled meat, fish, pasta, fresh salads, pancakes. The restaurants next door and across the street are used to families and the staff are welcoming. Local ice cream (akullore) is a chapter of its own and a reliable bargaining chip.
The apartment as a family base
The apartment has a fully equipped kitchen, so you can make porridge or warm up milk in the morning without hunting around. There's also a washing machine – a lifesaver on a longer stay with children. The balcony has no sea view, but it's a good spot for breakfast and for sitting out once the kids are asleep.
The beach two steps from the door
Step out the door and the beach is two minutes away. With small children that's a world of difference: a morning swim, lunch and a nap in the apartment, then back to the water in the afternoon – no long transfers or packing the car.
Practical odds and ends
There's a small shop under the building and a supermarket nearby, so nappies, water and snacks are within reach. Carry cash (lek), bring water shoes for the pebbles, and plan around the strong midday sun – shade, hats and sunscreen are essentials here.
FAQ
Is Saranda a good place for a holiday with young children?
Yes. Distances are short, the sea in the coves (especially at Ksamil) is shallow and calm, and locals are used to families. The apartment's kitchen and washing machine also make the daily routine much easier.
Where is the best swimming with kids?
The calm, shallow coves at Ksamil, roughly 20 minutes from Saranda, are ideal for little ones. In season they get busy, so it's worth arriving earlier in the morning.
Can children manage a trip to Butrint or the Blue Eye?
Yes, just keep the day light. The terrain at Butrint is uneven in places, so a baby carrier often beats a pram. Bring snacks, water and cash for entry fees.
Do we have to drive everywhere with the kids?
No. The beach is about two minutes from the house, with a shop under the building and restaurants next door, so a normal day works on foot. You'll mainly use a car for day trips.
